Jesus said: “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me. I needed clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you looked after me. I was in prison and you came to visit me.” ~ Matthew 25:35-36 ~
East Church is helping to end the cycle of homelessness in Grand Rapids. In partnership with Family Promise, East Church hosts homeless families in shelter for one week, several times each year. Volunteers help to provide dinner, offer respite care for children, stay overnight as on-site hosts, and staff the desk.
Our neighbors in need of shelter are invited to the church cafe for warmth, safety, and community. Each guest has a cot for sleeping with warm blankets and storage so they don’t have to carry everything throughout the day. Newspapers and books are available to read and a movie is shown many nights. A healthy dinner is served each night and a hot breakfast is offered each morning.
Social service representatives are available to connect people with resources such as medical care, substance addiction treatment, vocational counseling, and more to build a better future. We’re grateful for the collaboration of community organizations to break the cycle of homelessness
