About the Gallery

The McBride Gallery, nestled within the historic East Congregational Church, stands as a living tribute to the enduring influence of Walter and Lois McBride. Born from a desire to carry their cultural torch forward, the gallery has evolved from a memorial into a dynamic home for contemporary expression and community conversation.

Walter H. “Mac” McBride (1905–2003) was a visionary muralist, educator, and a cornerstone of the Michigan art scene, most notably serving as the Director of the Grand Rapids Art Museum from 1954 to 1970. Alongside his wife Lois, an exceptional master of tapestry, the McBrides dedicated their lives to the belief that art is a vital human necessity.

In honor of their multidisciplinary lives, we host a rotating collection of works from local and global artists. Our curated selections bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, featuring fine art paintings and murals that reflect Walter’s legacy, intricate textiles that nod to Lois’s mastery, and modern handcrafted design and sculpture. The McBride Gallery is more than a room with art on the walls; it is a gathering space where beauty and introspection continue to spark joy for new generations.
